Under/Over betting terms
There is more to betting on sports than simply picking the winner, and one of the most popular ways to play is selecting the over/under. The over/under is a bet on whether the total stats from a sporting event will be over or under a number determined beforehand by a bookmaker. The most common number to bet on is the combined score at the end of an event, but any numerical statistic can be used. Basically, all you have to do as the better is decide if the number provided is a low or high estimate. If you think the number selected by the bookmaker is too low, you take the over.
Say Liverpool is hosting Everton in an English Premier League match, the over/under for the combined final score could be set at 2.5. If you took the over, you would need the combined final score to add up to three or more in order to win. If Liverpool wins 2-1, you win the bet. It is not always as straightforward, as sometimes the number set by the bookmaker is a whole number. This opens up the potential for a push, or a tie in which neither better or bookmaker lose their money. For example, the over/under for the final score of an NBA game could be set at 215 points, and if Oklahoma City defeats San Antonio 113-102, the final result would be a push.
You can bet on stats within a game as well, say how many yards one team's quarterback will throw for in a football game or how many three pointers two teams will combine for in a basketball game. It doesn't even have to involve the play on the field, with no better example than the Super Bowl. You can bet on almost anything on Super Bowl Sunday, including the length of time it will take for the National Anthem to be sung. If the number was set at two minutes but you believe an extended rendition is on the way, you bet the over.
Like any form of betting, there are of course both pros and cons to playing the over/under. The biggest benefit is that you aren't relying on one team to defeat the other in order to win the bet. It doesn't matter who comes out on top in the end, only whether the total in question finishes above or below the predicted outcome. Another benefit is that you are generally taking the same risk in exchange for the same potential reward no matter which side you pick. There is no need to assess the potential payout against the likelihood of a certain side winning, simply choose over or under and the betting lines are the same.
There are cons as well, chief among them being that winning over the long haul is difficult. Even if you get off to a hot start, if you keep playing, the 50/50 nature of the bet will begin to even the odds. This leads to another drawback, the house usually comes out on top. With each side likely to win 50% of the time, the bookmaker can sit back and collect the fees.
While it may not be profitable in the long run, is also unlikely to empty your wallet either. When done properly, playing the over/under can be a very enjoyable addition to your game-viewing experience.
